An EDR stands for endpoint protection and response. It is used to gather, analyze and respond to cybersecurity threats. Unlike an antivirus that can only prevent and remove known viruses and is only as efficient as its last update. An EDR will also give alerts based on emerging threats and strange activity on the network.

If data protection is top of mind right now an EDR can offer peace of mind. Using the data analysis an EDR can see strange patterns on the business network and see if data is being moved or transferred. It protects the business from man in the middle attacks. internal or external theft or user error. It can also produce reports that can be used for training, business planning and cyber insurance.

One of the key features of an EDR is that it can recognize the type of threat and respond to an active even. Giving you protection and time to remedy a threat. The EDR will immediately isolate an area of potential threat before it can move to affect a larger area of the business. For example if there is a bad actor trying to force entry into an area of the network. This will prevent any access to a larger part of the network and allow your IT team to work to find a solution.

Your team can then use the logs to figure out the source of the threat and how it was able to gain access to the network. Your team can then run tests to make sure the network is now secure and keep the analysis and resolution for insurance purposes. Most insurance will require an EDR be in place as it provides evidence that a company is taking proactive measures to protect, continues to monitor for emerging threats and will take remediation measures immediately.

Remember bad actors will target businesses that are easy and have the least amount of protection in place, and if there is an easy entry once it will continue to be targeted. an EDR can help mitigate risk and observe areas of easy entry. It can offer better protection than an antivirus alone and learns what is normal for your business.
