Preparing for the End of Windows Support: Options for Ontario Executive

As many of you may know, Windows 10 is set to reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. This means that Microsoft will cease providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this operating system. While your PCs will continue to function, they will no longer receive the necessary updates to keep them secure and efficient, placing your organization at risk.

If you've already attempted to upgrade to Windows 11 but encountered compatibility issues, fear not—there are still several pathways available to you. Let’s explore five viable options for navigating this transition.

1. Delay the Transition (Not Recommended)

While it's technically possible to continue using Windows 10 after the support deadline, we strongly advise against it. Operating without security updates opens your business to cyber threats and vulnerabilities, as your devices will lack critical protections against malware and other risks. Additionally, the absence of technical support could lead to operational inefficiencies, making this a high-risk choice.

2. Switch to Linux

For those who are comfortable with technology and willing to explore alternatives, transitioning to the Linux operating system is an option. This would involve removing Windows 10 and installing Linux, which can provide a secure and efficient environment. However, this approach may come with its own set of challenges, including compatibility issues with existing software and hardware. Ensure you're ready to tackle these potential hurdles before making this leap.

3. Upgrade "Incompatible" PCs Using a Workaround

If your PC has been deemed incompatible but you still wish to upgrade, there is a workaround that some users have successfully employed. By making a minor registry change and ensuring that your system is configured to use Secure Boot with Trusted Platform Module (TPM), you may be able to proceed with the upgrade to Windows 11 despite initial error messages. Keep in mind that this approach carries risks, including the possibility of voiding manufacturer warranties if issues arise post-upgrade.

4. Subscribe to Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates

Microsoft has announced Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10, available for subscription starting in December 2023. This option allows businesses to receive essential security updates for a fee. However, it’s worth noting that the costs are significant: the first year is priced at $61, which doubles in the second year and again in the third, totaling approximately $427 over three years. While this might provide temporary relief, it is not intended as a long-term solution, and you will lack technical support during this period.

For educational institutions, the pricing structure is considerably lower, starting at just $1 for the first year. However, this option still does not include technical support, making it a less-than-ideal solution for those seeking comprehensive assistance.

5. Invest in a New PC

If your existing hardware is aging and not meeting performance standards, investing in a new PC that is compatible with Windows 11 may be the best route forward. New devices typically offer enhanced speed, security features, and improved productivity. As you consider this option, be sure to conduct thorough backups of your data to prevent any loss during the transition.
